Star Gazing

Laying in wet grass
during a star-studded night
watching our galaxy stretch across the sky
wondering...
did I leave my oven on?

Hitchhike Humiliation

I was standing by a busy highway
attempting to thumb a ride into town
when a minivan passed by.
A little boy in the backseat 
smiled at me and gave me a thumbs-up of his own.
I smiled and waved back at him
but immediately regretted it
when he turned his thumb upside-down
stuck his tongue out at me
and disappeared down the freeway
laughing hysterically.

Fourmile Lake - Sky Lakes Wilderness, OR

I'm paddling around Fourmile Lake 
trolling for trout
and idly awaiting a bite - 
when an osprey circling above
tucks its wings
and dive bombs towards the surface at mock speed
slams into the water next to me
flies away with a fish
and disappears high into the tree-tops.

Stunned and humiliated
I reel in my line
only to discover that my bait has vanished.
